Going to the Savoy
Doris Williams reflects on how special it was for her and her family to go to the Savoy Theater.
Transcript: Savoy Theater – yeah, my father would take us there from time to time when we could afford it. That was a big thing too – yeah, we got to go the Savoy, the Savoy Theater. That was a big theater to us. We were wealthy [laughter]. In our, you know, in our sense, we were wealthy.
Keeping Cool in the Savoy
Arthur Griffin notes that providing air conditioning gave the Savoy Theater a leg up on the neighborhood rival Lincoln Theater.
Transcript: Brooklyn was there from an education perspective, both the libraries and the school system, and for recreation, in terms of the only theater I knew of at the time was the Lincoln Theater. Now, subsequently to Lincoln, they built the Savoy on McDowell. They had air conditioning, so that was a step up. But, back in the old days, before they built the Savoy on McDowell Street, it was the Lincoln Theater.
