Young Historians Academy: Catawba Culture

Young Historians Academy: Catawba Culture

This camp is fully booked.

No school? No problem! Turn September 23 into a day of adventure, creativity, and storytelling at Levine Museum’s Young Historians Academy – Catawba Culture Day Camp.

Our free day camp offers 1st through 3rd graders a unique opportunity to step into the past and experience history in hands-on, engaging ways. Campers will explore the world, language, games and culture of the Catawba people – a Native American tribe currently based in South Carolina.

We’ll begin the day diving into a world of storytelling with two tales by contemporary Catawba author D.S. Sistare, creating pottery inspired by traditional Catawba styles and designing vibrant animal masks.

We’ll spend time outdoors, enjoying a nature walk with a fun scavenger hunt to spark curiosity. We’ll also play Native American-inspired games, including Pebble Patterns, where campers will test their memory by recreating intricate pebble designs.

Fun facts for you:

Did you know the Catawba language was originally a spoken-only language with no corresponding written words? Or that Catawba pottery has been crafted continuously for over 4,000 years? Campers will get to experience this rich heritage firsthand and bring their artistic creations home to share with you.

They’ll enjoy a day full of fun, learning, and creativity!

Admission to camp is free, but registration is required. It includes 4 hours of attendance, all activity supplies, and special takeaways. Drop-off begins at 8:45 am and pick-up is at 1:00 pm. Snack time is at 11:00 am. Please send your child with peanut-free snacks and a water bottle.

This camp is for children considered 1st–3rd graders at the time of camp. September 23 is a CMS teacher workday, but any student of the required age is welcome, including homeschool students.

Each camp is rooted in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for Art, English Language Arts, and Social Studies, and also supports Social Emotional Learning Competencies.
