In partnership with Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture and Levine Museum of the New South, high school-aged (14-17 years) youth around the city are encouraged to apply to our open call to participate in a free 4-part performing arts winter camp. Inspired by the Men of Change: Power. Triumph. Truth. exhibition, the camp will culminate into a public performance for the community to enjoy on Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend.

About the Change Makers Performing Arts Series

Be the change you want to see in the world. This performing arts-focused camp puts a spotlight on performing as an agent of change on stage. We will create original work as well as rehearse speeches and monologues highlighting what makes a compelling change-maker. We will end the series by sharing our work with family and friends in a public performance. All experience levels of high school-aged performers are encouraged to apply. This small group of students will cultivate skills in public speaking, stage presence, creative writing, creative direction, and teamwork.

Change Makers Performing Arts Series includes four classes on Wednesday evenings at the Harvey B. Gantt Center – December 14, 21, 28, and January 4, from 3:30 pm – 6:30 pm. Students will be provided dinner and will receive 10-ride passes for CATS and Lynx transportation (parents/guardians are welcome to drop students off and pick them up).

The Change Makers performance and reception will be Saturday, January 14, from 2 pm – 4 pm.

How to Apply

For a chance to be selected as a Change Maker performer with the permission of your parent/guardian, please email with the following:

  1. Email subject line should read: Submission for Change Makers [applicant’s full name]
  2. A two to three (2-3) minute YouTube video of the applicant answering the following in their own way:
    • Introduce yourself!
    • What stories would you want to tell about the people who inspire you?
    • What do you love most about the performing arts?
    • Anything else you would like to add to be considered for the winter camp

Be sure to post the video on YouTube first and include the link in your email. You can make the video unlisted so that it is not readily viewable to the public. Please do not make the video private, we will not be able to view it.

Also, be sure to provide the applicant’s:

  • Full name and phone number
  • Age and birth date
  • Parent(s)/guardian(s) full name, email, and phone number(s). Parent/guardian will be contacted to confirm application.
  • Dietary allergies or food preferences
  • School and grade (number)
